How to read the Genetic Code: a different journey into genetics and rare diseases
From 12 to 16 February, the Craiova Society of Medical Students and the Human Genomics Laboratory (LGU - UMFCV) will implement, with the support of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, the innovative project "How to read the Genetic Code: a different journey into genetics and rare diseases". This project takes place in the month in which the International Day of Rare Diseases is celebrated and aims to bring closer to the community the progress made in the field of molecular biology and the principles of genomic medicine, thus continuing the activities carried out in this direction in Oltenia by the late Prof. PhD Mihai Ioana. The project is aimed at high school students from "Frații Buzești" National High School, "Elena Cuza" National High School and "Carol I" National High School, who will have the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of the human genetic code through specialized lectures and practical activities. The aim of the project is to provide participants with a detailed understanding of the topics covered, to increase their interest in medical sciences and to provide relevant information about rare genetic diseases. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with dedicated students who will accompany them on an exciting journey into the world of DNA and heredity, together with members of LGU - UMFCV. At the end of the project, students will have the opportunity to participate in the conference “Exploring the Future of Medicine: AI-Driven Learning and Cutting-Edge Technology in Genomics Education” given by Daniel Salcedo (MD, MHPE), a specialist in Educational Technology in the United States.Read more ›››

ROCCAS II screening programme at its end. More than 51,400 people received free access to early diagnosis and treatment
ROCCAS II screening programme at its end. More than 51,400 people received free access to early diagnosis and treatment The free screening programme "High-performance medical services for prevention, diagnosis and endoscopic treatment of colorectal cancer" (ROCCAS II), implemented by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova and the "Always for Europe" Association, has come to its end.The concluding conference will take place on Thursday, 9th November 2023, at 11.00 a.m., in the Senate Hall of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Craiova, in the same place where exactly three years ago the team started their work. From November 2020 to December 2023, teams of medical specialists, more than 200 family doctors, specialists in health policies and programmes, students and administrative authorities went to the population of the South - West Oltenia region with messages for prevention, but also with logistics and availability to detect, evaluate and treat colorectal premalignant lesions free of charge. In this way, more than 51,400 people aged between 50 and 74 have benefited from free access to high quality medical services of prevention, screening, diagnosis and early treatment. Of the more than 51,400 patients screened, 58% are from rural areas. With this programme, 2825 FIT-positive individuals were identified and more than 1500 lower digestive endoscopies were performed. ROCCAS was a large programme with multiple implications for both the target group and the entire population in the Oltenia Region. The long-term benefits are lowering the costs of health services by applying treatment at an early stage, increasing the life span of the target group, adherence to correct preventive behaviour, both on the part of patients and family doctors. Colorectal cancer ranks third in the world in terms of incidence and 11% of all cancers. More than one million people are diagnosed with the condition each year. In Romania, colorectal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, with a mortality rate above the world average. More details on www.preventiasalveazavieti.ro and on www.umfcv.ro.Read more ›››

Education and prevention campaign ContraTimp (Against the clock)
Education and prevention campaign ContraTimp (Against the clock) The University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMF) of Craiova in partnership with the University of Craiova, the Public Health Directorate (DSP) Dolj and the Dolj County School Inspectorate invites you on Wednesday, 11 October 2023, from 14.00, in Aula Magna (Bdv. 1 Mai, nr. 66), where the first education and prevention campaign of the academic year 2023-2024, ContraTimp (Against the clock) - dedicated to raising awareness of the impact of meningococcal meningitis will kick off. Participants: Prof. Dan Ionuț Gheonea - Rector UMF Craiova, Lect. Dr. Gindrovel Dumitra - Secretary General of the Romanian College of Physicians, Lect. Dr. Adina Turcu - Manager of the Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases and Pneumophthisiology "Victor Babeș" Craiova, Dr. Narciza Dinică - Head of Health Promotion Office DSP Dolj, Simona Ciulu - ISJ Dolj. The specialists invite the population to go to the family doctors' offices, to get correct information from specialized sources and to consider the option of prevention. Meningococcal disease is an under-diagnosed disease. The first symptoms are non-specific, which greatly delays the initiation of antibiotic therapy. It can take only a few hours from the first symptoms to death! There are three risk groups: infants and young children, the elderly and adolescents. Of these, teenagers appear to be the most at risk and become the main source of transmission to other age groups. Transmission of meningococcal disease among young people is favoured by specific behaviours: socialising, sharing tools, kissing, etc. The most common symptoms are: high fever, headache, stiff neck, rapid breathing, drowsiness, eye sensitivity to light, muscle or joint pain, convulsions, etc. What are the consequences of infection? In addition to the problem of non-specific symptoms that delay treatment and hasten death, the infected person may be left with physical sequelae (there are cases of amputation of limbs), emotional sequelae, visual or hearing impairments, mental, motor, speech impairments and many others. The ContraTimp (Against the clock) campaign is initiated by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova and is part of the Meningococcal Meningitis Awareness Programme.Read more ›››
