Colorectal cancer screening in Oltenia: over 2,000 people included in the ROCCAS 4 SVO program

The regional colorectal cancer screening program (ROCCAS 4-SVO), implemented by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, is beginning to yield concrete results: over 2,000 people have already been enrolled. Initial tests have identified cases requiring further gastroenterological evaluation and colonoscopies, confirming the essential role of prevention and early detection Data centralized through mid-April shows not only a significant mobilization of the population in the South-West Oltenia region but also a validation of the objectives set at the project's launch: facilitating access to medical screening services for vulnerable groups and increasing awareness about the importance of preventive check-ups. Over 1,500 people have already benefited from preventive consultations with their family doctors, entered the screening workflow, and received the FIT test—a non-invasive method for the early detection of colorectal cancer. The testing process is already revealing important public health indicators—a 6.68% positivity rate for the FIT tests. This confirms the program's relevance and the necessity of early intervention in detecting oncological conditions. These interim results reflect the phased implementation of the project's objectives, particularly the facilitation of access to screening services for vulnerable groups and the enhancement of awareness regarding the importance of prevention. "The results so far show that prevention works when it reaches those who need it most. Through this program, we are not just talking about numbers, but about people who have the chance to be saved from developing colon cancer or the chance of an early diagnosis and, consequently, timely treatment. ROCCAS 4 SVO means access, trust, and responsibility – and our mission is to bring medicine closer to the people, not only through intervention but also through information and dialogue. This week, the first colonoscopies within the screening program for the residents of the Oltenia region are being performed at the UMF Craiova Prevention Center," stated the Rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, Prof. Dan Gheonea, PhD. The South-West Oltenia colorectal cancer screening program is carried out through the project: "Regional program for prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and early treatment of colorectal cancer South-West Oltenia (ROCCAS 4 SVO)", Code SMIS 344756. The project is implemented between September 30, 2025, and September 30, 2029, by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova in partnership with the "Mereu Pentru Europa" Association. It has a total value of 35,331,054.42 RON, of which the non-reimbursable co-financing from the European Union amounts to 30,031,396.26 RON. Project co-financed by the European Union from the European Social Fund Plus through the 2021-2027 Health Program.

How to read the Genetic Code: a journey into genetics and rare diseases, 2026

Between February 23–March 2, 2026, the Medical Students' Society of Craiova and the Human Genomics Laboratory (LGU - UMFCV), with the support of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, the Cell and Molecular Biology Student Circle, and the Little People’s Association (Asociația Oamenilor Mici), are organizing the third edition of the project 'How to Read the Genetic Code: A Journey into Genetics and Rare Diseases'. This initiative, which has already become an academic tradition, was launched in memory of Professor Mihai Ioana, PhD, a prominent figure in Romanian medical genetics, whose contributions shaped genomic research and education regarding rare diseases. The event is part of a series of manifestations dedicated to Rare Disease Day and aims to contribute to the awareness campaign regarding the importance of early diagnosis, advanced research, and community support for individuals affected by complex genetic pathologies. Given that over 70% of rare diseases are genetic in origin, understanding molecular mechanisms represents the foundation of precision medicine for these conditions. The activities of the project's third edition will debut on February 24, with educational presentations held by UMF Craiova students at the 'Ștefan Velovan' National Pedagogical College, between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM. On Thursday, February 26, starting at 12:00 PM, the Human Genomics Laboratory (LGU) will open its doors to students, offering them the opportunity to directly discover research activities and the practical applications of genomic medicine in diagnosing rare conditions. This third edition will conclude with the conference 'A Genetic Puzzle: From Symptoms to Diagnosis in Rare Genetic Diseases,' held on March 2 in the 'Mihai Ioana' Auditorium. Dedicated to specialists, residents, and students, the conference aims to promote the multidisciplinary approach in the diagnosis and management of rare diseases, as utilized within Centres of Expertise and European Reference Networks (ERNs). Under the symbolic concept of a 'Genetic Puzzle,' the presentations will reconstruct the complex patient journey, from the first clinical manifestations to molecular confirmation and the establishment of therapeutic management. UMF Craiova: Call 112 responsibly. Every second counts!

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova joins the Special Telecommunications Service initiative to mark European 112 Day, through a gesture of solidarity and an invitation to social responsibility. Turning red for our heroes! 🔴 Starting at 18:00 on February 11, UMF Craiova will light up its buildings in red to honor the dedicated professionals of the emergency services who work tirelessly to save lives every single day. The 112 emergency number has been operational in Romania for 22 years, providing a direct link between citizens and specialized intervention agencies – ambulance, police, fire department, gendarmerie, and mountain rescue. In 2025, service operators managed over 8.8 million calls, of which nearly 64% were real emergencies requiring the intervention of authorities Recent statistics highlight a positive shift: in 2025, non-justified calls to the 112 emergency line reached an all-time low since the system's inception, dropping to roughly 36% of total traffic. More than 2.2 million abusive calls were recorded, threatening to delay emergency responses in life-threatening situations. In this context, UMF Craiova supports the authorities' message regarding the responsible use of the 112 emergency line, which is essential for prioritizing severe cases and ensuring rapid intervention where every second counts. ”As an institution that trains future healthcare professionals, we promote not only medical knowledge but also correct behaviors in emergency situations. PharmVac-RO strengthens the pharmacist's role in vaccination in Romania

The Leadership of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova is pleased to invite you on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 1:00 PM, to the Senate Hall (2 Petru Rareș St.), for the presentation of the international project 'PharmVac-RO: Enhancing Pharmaceutical Services of Vaccination in Romania Through Awareness, Advanced Training and Digital Tools'. This is a strategic initiative dedicated to the development of vaccination services within community pharmacies in Romania. Joining academic staff and researchers, as well as representatives of independent pharmacies and local and national pharmacy chains, the event will feature guest speakers Dr. Silvia Gatscher, Health Operations Manager at the WHO Country Office in Romania, and Associate Professor Gindrovel Dumitra, MD, PhD, coordinator of the Vaccinology Group within the National Society of Family Medicine. The initiative aims to optimize the pharmacist's role within the national immunization strategy by strengthening the vaccination service provided in community pharmacies. Although Romanian legislation was updated in 2022 to allow pharmacists to administer influenza vaccines, recent research data show that professional, educational, and communication barriers persist, limiting the full integration of this service into current practice. To address these challenges, the PharmVac-RO project is structured around two main pillars. The first pillar aims to develop and implement the 'PharmVac-RO Toolkit', an open-access digital educational resource tailored to the specific context and needs of Romanian pharmacists. The second pillar focuses on enhancing the professional competence and confidence of pharmacists, with an emphasis on three essential areas: correct vaccine administration, management of adverse reactions, and effective communication with patients. Pharmacists in Romania will have access to modern and interactive educational tools, including animated video materials as procedural guides, infographics and course materials, interactive case studies, as well as a series of podcasts featuring practical dialogues between pharmacists and experts in infectious diseases or public health, dedicated to clarifying complex topics related to vaccination. “The PharmVac-RO project stems from a clear reality: the legislative framework exists, but for vaccination in community pharmacies to become a functional, safe, and widely accepted service, there is a need for training, confidence, and tools adapted to real-world practice. Through this project, we aim to provide Romanian pharmacists with more than just information—we aim to offer applied skills and professional support in a modern, accessible, and relevant format. The PharmVac-RO Toolkit is designed as concrete support for the pharmacist who interacts daily with patients and can play an essential role in increasing vaccination coverage and trust in healthcare services,” stated Professor Adina Turcu Știolică, PhD, Project Manager. The project, supported by an educational grant from Pfizer Global Medical Grants, was declared the winner in a competition involving no fewer than 20 countries. In Romania, it is implemented through the collaboration between the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova and the 'George Emil Palade' University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Târgu Mureș. Through PharmVac-RO, the partners aim to contribute to the consolidation of pharmaceutical vaccination services, the enhancement of pharmacists' professional confidence, and, implicitly, the improvement of public access to safe, modern immunization services that are well-integrated into the Romanian healthcare system.

UMF Craiova – A national first in sustainable radiology

The Imaging Center of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, the first in Romania to be Green ID certified by the European Society of Radiology The Imaging Center of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova has obtained the Green ID certification, becoming the first radiology center in Romania to receive this recognition awarded by the European Society of Radiology (ESR). The ESR's Green ID initiative supports the integration of green radiology principles into the current activity of imaging departments, recognizing the concrete implementation of sustainable practices: from energy efficiency and resource optimization, to reducing environmental impact and responsibility towards the community. For UMF Craiova, this certification is proof that sustainability can be effectively applied in radiology, regardless of a department's size or profile. The evaluation process is rigorous and transparent, and the ESR platform provides clear, step-by-step guidance that facilitates the adoption of best practice standards. Sustainable radiology is not a theoretical concept, but a professional necessity that reflects care for patients, responsibility toward the community, and a commitment to the environment. The Green ID certification awarded by the European Society of Radiology is based on a rigorous set of criteria evaluating how imaging departments integrate sustainability into their daily operations. The assessment process covers nine key areas, such as sustainability education and training, energy efficiency, waste management, responsible resource use, procurement, governance, and the environmental impact of professional activities. Among these, three criteria are mandatory: sustainability education, the existence of a dedicated working group, and energy consumption management. Certification is granted to departments that demonstrate the practical implementation of these measures and achieve a minimum score set by the ESR. The certificate is valid for three years and reflects a real, measurable, and verifiable commitment to sustainable radiology.

Ministry of Health – G6-UMF University Alliance

The Ministry of Health, together with the G6-UMF University Alliance, informs candidates and the interested public that for the National Residency Entrance Exam in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, scheduled to take place on November 15, 2026, the exam format and the bibliographies used in 2025 will remain unchanged. This decision was adopted following consultations between the Ministry of Health and the representatives of the universities of medicine and pharmacy within the G6-UMF Alliance, with the primary objective of ensuring stability, predictability, and fairness for all candidates preparing for the residency exam. Maintaining the same format and bibliography allows candidates to continue their preparation under clear and transparent conditions, without substantive changes that could affect the educational and evaluation process. Any additional information regarding the organization of the exam will be communicated in a timely manner through the official channels of the Ministry of Health and the universities of medicine and pharmacy.

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Craiova maintains its presence in the international rankings made by Times Higher Education, in which 2191 universities are evaluated. The result confirms the stability of academic and research performance in the World University Rankings 2026. In the national standings - the universities of medicine, UMF Craiova is maintained on the third global. UMF Craiova is positioned in the range of 1001-1200, and in the clinical clinical & health rankings is found in the 801-1000 range. The analysis of the indicators used by Times Higher Education highlights clear strengths of UMF Craiova in the field of research, especially in terms of research quality (Research Quality). The score obtained at this indicator reflects the scientific impact of publications, the visibility of research results and their integration into the international academic circuit, confirmed by articles published in indexed journals and by participating in national and international research projects. The Research Environment Indicator captures the size and institutional capacity of the research ecosystem, the effect in the process of consolidation at UMF Craiova. In this respect, the Institutional Development Strategy 2025-2029 provides for consistent investments in the research, digitization and project management infrastructure, as well as the development of dedicated structures, such as the research department. Open Doors Days at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova is organizing the Open Doors Days on November 20–21, 2025. The official opening will take place on Thursday, November 20, at 10:00 AM, in Aula Magna (Bvd. 1 Mai, no. 66). The event includes meetings with professors and students, presentations of the study programs, discussions about student life at UMF Craiova, and—most importantly—more than 60 interactive workshops held in the laboratories of all faculties. The workshops cover various areas of medical sciences, from first aid, cell biology, and genetics to dental impressions, microscopy, medical imaging, pharmacy, aesthetic medicine, medicinal plants, and many more. The activities are coordinated by university staff and student volunteers, with a limited number of participants per session to ensure hands-on, practical experience.
